I am sorry my writing has become so sporadic. I am a little preoccupied at the moment since we are in the midst of a major move (I will hopefully write more about that soon!)

Because we are moving, we are hosting a small kiddush this Shabbat. I told my five year-old daughter about the kiddush this morning, knowing how excited she would be (there will be cholent there and she loves cholent). She was in fact very excited and then said, "And I want me and Ima to make hamotzi."

Actually, there won't be bread at the kiddush so no one will be making hamotzi. But this interchange reinforced for me the educational impact of small things we do in our homes. Children tend to model their parents' behavior, for the good or the bad. My daughter has seen me make hamotzi at our Shabbat table for as long as she can remember. I feel proud that now she is growing up imagining herself doing the same thing.

In our community, it's almost always the woman who makes hamotzi. The man makes kiddush, the woman makes hamotzi.

Personally, I like the symbolism. The bread, the staff of life, is to me, symbolic of the home, sustenance, warmth that the woman of the house provides (disclaimer: recognizing of course, that there are men who provide this as well, and that these are not the only provisions that a woman can make, etc., etc.). It's appropriate, then, that the woman should make hamotzi.

However, in a setting where the other men would be comfortable hearing the woman in question (or any other woman) say hamotzi, or just participating in casual conversation with her, there is no reason for them to refuse to be exempted by her kiddush.

I used to get so annoyed in college when a woman who came into the dining hall too late to hear communal kiddush would start asking a guy - one who was already eating and had obviously accepted kiddush, no less - to make kiddush for her. Not women who were unable to read the Hebrew, either. They just thought it was "wrong" for them to say it for themselves.
