Eating Disorders in Jewish Schools

"Eating disorders are increasingly prevalent among Jewish and Orthodox adolescents," according to a new booklet called Body and Soul: Addressing Eating Disorders by Dr. Caroline Peyser and a research team, published by ATID. The booklet is an informative, user-friendly guide for educators on how to help students who may exhibit signs of Anorexia and Bulimia.

Eating disorders among students is particularly a problem for girls away from home studying in Israel. Dr. Peyser also provides resources and ideas which can help schools to deal with this tragic problem when it occurs. Furthermore, the booklet contains a halakhic section, including sources and guiding questions. This can be useful to teachers and students, who would like to learn more about what Jewish sources, such as the Torah, Midrash and the Rambam, have to say about caring for oneself.

Kol Hakavod to ATID for addressing this unfortunate problem.

This is unfortunately a major problem. I have heard so much apocryphal evidence of this being so common in mostly girls, but with the incidence in boys apparently rising steadily. I've heard stories of kids taking laxatives, exercising madly, eating nothing for days but plain lettuce. Scary stuff.
